Bravo to Our Local Youth Orchestras

The future of classical music in Northern Nevada looks, and sounds, pretty good these days.  Three youth orchestras affiliated with the Reno Philharmonic took the stage last week to present their fall concert.  What impressed me was the number of young people who take up an instrument, practice it with perseverance, and then get up in front of an audience to play.  Bravo!

The newly-founded Youth Strings Symphonia performed first.  Some of the musicians aren’t much older than ten, but they take their music seriously.  Their rendition of Carol of the Bells was short, but very sweet.  The crowd gave them a standing ovation.

Next up, the Youth Concert Orchestra, made up of slightly older, young musicians.  The orchestra shows dedication and real talent.  Dr. Jason Altieri brings energy to the podium and seems to coax every good note from the young musicians. Altieri also leads the Youth Symphony Orchestra, which is comprised of older teens.  They played some complicated pieces, quite beautifully, and it was a treat to watch these young musicians show their stuff.

All this cost a mere ten dollars per ticket. Again, bravo to the Reno Philharmonic’s Youth Orchestras.  Everyone take a bow, you deserve it.
